Chapter One: Introduction
1.1 Background of the Study
Domestic violence is a pervasive issue with profound social, psychological, and economic implications. It affects individuals, families, and communities, cutting across all socioeconomic and cultural boundaries. In Nigeria, domestic violence is a significant public health concern, with many victims suffering in silence due to stigma, cultural norms, and inadequate legal protections. Television, as a mass communication medium, plays a vital role in raising awareness and fostering dialogue about domestic violence. Through news reports, documentaries, dramas, and public service announcements, television can expose the prevalence of abuse, educate viewers about their rights, and promote available support systems (Ibrahim & Ahmed, 2023). In Sakaba Local Government Area of Kebbi State, where traditional values often reinforce silence around domestic violence, television has the potential to challenge harmful norms and encourage victims to seek help. Recent studies underscore the importance of tailored media content that resonates with local audiences, highlighting the need for culturally sensitive programming to address domestic violence effectively (Bala & Yusuf, 2024). This study aims to explore how television is utilized to create awareness about domestic violence in Sakaba, assessing its impact and identifying opportunities for improvement.
1.2 Statement of the Problem
Despite the increasing visibility of domestic violence in public discourse, the issue remains deeply entrenched in Sakaba Local Government Area. Factors such as low literacy levels, cultural norms that prioritize family privacy, and inadequate access to support services contribute to the persistence of abuse. While television holds significant promise as a tool for awareness creation, its potential in Sakaba is underutilized due to limited access to tailored programming and infrastructural challenges, such as irregular electricity supply. Moreover, there is a lack of empirical data on how television content influences attitudes and behaviors related to domestic violence in the area. This research seeks to address these gaps by examining the role of television in raising awareness about domestic violence, with a focus on its reach, content strategies, and effectiveness in Sakaba.
